This might be Uncharted 4’s greatest achievement, if it wasn’t for the way this game looks. It is a testament to Naughty Dog’s storytelling talent - unearthed in 2013’s glorious Last Of Us - that, at about the half hour mark, you begin to feel a deep sense of empathy for Nathan and Sam - two men who are, essentially, semi-retired, mass murdering career criminals. Where its predecessors relied on snappy one liners and explosions, Uncharted 4 takes the time to establish each of its characters - old and new - against a convincing storyline driven by the emotions and agendas of its cast. As time has passed, protagonist Nathan Drake has packed in the crazy adventures of his youthgetting shot in the stomach, murdering bad guys by the dozen and surviving entire buildings toppling down around himand swapped it. When push comes to shove, Uncharted is one of the better comic adaptations of a video game out there.
#Uncharted 4 review series
When his long-lost brother Sam suddenly reappears, adventure resurfaces. Fans of the Uncharted series were probably surprised when publishers Naughty Dog announced theyd be making a fourth installment of their hugely successful. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End begins some time after the climactic events of the previous game, Drake’s Deception. After a superb 2009 sequel helped Naughty Dog shake off the ‘Dude Raider’ vibes, I was disappointed by the 2011 releases of both Drake’s Deception and Golden Abyss. He goes to bed early on weekdays and tries in vain to vent his need for adventure through the static glow of a television. Nathan Drake has had a hell of a ride since his 2007 debut, though it’s one that has had its ups and downs. He banters with his colleagues, cooks dinner for his wife, looks through wedding photo albums and, occasionally, retreats to his man cave in the attic to reflect upon that time he found El Dorado, or survived falling out of a cargo plane with no parachute. The last time our wise-cracking hero will don his leather shoulder holster, leap from a crumbling platform, gun down an entire army of bad dudes and accidentally destroy a lost ancient city.

We join the game’s ageing protagonist as he settles into a 9-to-5 day job, his sense of adventure long since quelled.
